House of Music
Listen to your ears
Haus der Musik invites you to a discovery trip into the world of music.
HAUS DER MUSIK is an interactive discovery museum located in the heart of Vienna's first district nestled between St. Stephen's Cathedral and the Vienna State Opera. A host of interactive installations playfully communicate openness to new things, understanding and enthusiasm in approaching music.
A total of 5,000 square meters has been set aside exclusively for areas dedicated to a wide array of approaches to music, and most of all, to the experience of music. Four Austrian universities, two foreign university institutes, a young team of musicians and musicologists, artists from the multi-media world and other fields, audio technicians, architects and students were all involved in the development of the HAUS DER MUSIK. The HAUS DER MUSIK was awarded the Austrian Museum Prize for its originality. 67 new discoveries can be found here at the Haus der Musik.
At one time the former Palais of Archduke Charles, today's HAUS DER MUSIK was also the residence of Otto Nicolai (1810 - 1849), who composed the opera "The Merry Wives of Windsor" and founded the Vienna Philharmonic concerts here. This connection provided the impetus for the Vienna Philharmonic, with its Historical Archive, to make HAUS DER MUSIK its new home. Here, the scientific documentation of this world-famous orchestra continues and is made available to the public.
Ever since it opened its doors to visitors on June 15, 2000, HAUS DER MUSIK has been open to the public 365 days a year, from 10 a.m. to 10 p.m. Visitors are often amazed at just what surprises Vienna, the citadel of music with centuries of tradition, holds in store and how HAUS DER MUSIK bridges the gap between Vienna's rich musical heritage and its bright musical future.
It is thanks to a private initiative that HAUS DER MUSIK was established at Sailerstätte 30 without public funding. Particular thanks goes to our partners from the business community who recognized that HAUS DER MUSIK represented a worthwhile investment. As per January 15, 2005 HAUS DER MUSIK is owned by Wien Holding.
After it opened its doors to the public, Maestro Zubin Mehta assumed HAUS DER MUSIK's honorary chairmanship. What inspired him to do so was the cheerful and direct presentation of the musical material that brings people with a wide range of music tastes together, gets them talking, grabs their interest and counteracts any preconceived notions associated with encountering music from an intellectual and musicological point of view.
