A unique blend of East and West

Vienna has always been a melting pot of cultures - including culinary ones. In the late 19th century in particular, hundreds of thousands of people from all corners of the monarchy moved here. Within a few years, the city became one of the largest in the world - and one of the most diverse in culinary terms.

To this day, classic Viennese cuisine draws on these influences: traditional Viennese dishes such as schnitzel and boiled beef meet Bohemian pastries, Hungarian goulash meets Bavarian roast pork. The fact that Italy was once also part of the monarchy and thus in Vienna's catchment area is still evident today in the generous use of anchovies, capers and lemons in Viennese cuisine - after all, the mixture is not called "Viennese garnish" for nothing. And the city's desserts and coffee house culture have been world-famous for centuries anyway.

In recent years, Vienna has also become pleasingly international: there are now excellent Chinese, Thai, Levantine and Arabic restaurants here.

Experience a tasting menu at the Steirereck, one of the best restaurants in the world, feast in the elegant imperial atmosphere of the Hotel Sacher, sample home-style cooking in a Viennese pub, savour Viennese wine in one of the traditional Heurigen (wine taverns) or try the original Viennese street food at a sausage stand. Our staff will be happy to share their insider tips with you! As always, just a few minutes' walk away.
